Major Benefits Of Getting A U.S. Green Card

Statue of Liberty

Attaining a U.S. green card has numerous benefits. The most important one is the fact that it’s a major step to becoming a U.S. citizen.  All migrants should obtain a green card if they want to become a U.S. citizen.

Green card holders aka lawful permanent residents are enjoy several benefits such as the following:

Sponsoring Relatives

Green card holders can sponsor loved ones who can then apply for their own green cards. The loved one needs to be either a spouse or an immediate family member. In some special cases the loved one doesn’t even need to be an immediate family member and can be sponsored under the “Family Preference” category.

Pay Less For Higher Learning

One of the biggest benefits of obtaining a green card is that they pay substantially less for higher learning; tuition for college, university and even vocational schools is far less for green card holders than those who don’t have green cards.

Green card holders are also able to apply for financial aid to further reduce cost of tuition.

They Have Permanent Residency Status

Prior to getting their green cards, green card holders have to keep applying for different visas to maintain their residency in the country. Now that they have green cards, they’ll have to renew once every 10 years saving them time and effort. Every 10 years, they’ll have to fill out Form I-551 and submit it to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. This should be done 6 months before the green card expires.

Travel Is Easier

American Passport

For quick trips, having a green card at hand makes traveling easier. When traveling outside the U.S., if you happen to stay longer than 6 months, immigration services will challenge whether the U.S. is in fact your permanent residence. As a green card holder, it’s best not to take the risk and not be outside of the country for several months.

For green card holders who have been living outside the U.S. for longer than a year, the U.S. is no longer considered their permanent residence; it can be very difficult to prove otherwise. They may need to go though immigration hearings to persuade the judge that the U.S. is in fact their permanent home.

Green card holders working in the U.S. for over 10 years are eligible for Social Security benefits.
